Due to the personal request of its creator, Eskil’a Steenberg’a, LOVE no rating will be given. Ask, what about transferring the image of the game and showing it to potential buyers?? This is the case – the shortcomings of the project may disappear immediately after the publication of the article. Eskil reported that the client LOVE updated frequently, and by “frequently” he means “daily” in some cases. Updates may contain not only bug fixes, but also new “features”.
But to give an idea at least approximately what it is LOVE, need to describe her. This is not even an article, but rather a diary – the author talks about his impressions. It cannot be otherwise – the starting conditions in LOVE different, resources in the classical sense are absent. Only the sales model is almost traditional – ten euros per month.
Went to LOVE. It turns out that you can have adventures with a friend for free. That is, for ten euros you get one and a half accounts – two people can play, but only if one of them is already online.
Walked around the world. Here you need to look for certain symbols and bring them to your settlement.
I found a symbol, but it was necessary to get to it somehow cunningly – it was on the altar, which began to crumble under the character’s feet. As a result, he ended up in the water and went to respawn. I learned that the hero does not drown if he has underwater equipment with him.
I came across other characters – wearing huge hats and looking like mushrooms from afar. They opened fire, but I, using a blaster, won and replenished my energy reserves by picking up some things from them.
There’s terraforming here! That is, you can build a wall around the base, make towers! No restrictions – virtually any rock can be turned into a deep hole. Or create a plateau out of a depression. I’ve already seen man-made mountains and other architectural delights here.
Stumbled upon another tribe. Greeted the aborigines. At first they did nothing, remained silent and only then started shooting. I warned my people about the danger – it seems that they outnumber us in the number of symbols and numbers. Ours are just leveling the ground, there is no talk of stocking symbols.
LOVE works on proprietary technology created Eskil. The engine is called Quel Solaar, although it is not even an engine, but a whole set of tools that anyone can download from the official website. The game world is calculated and created directly on the computer running the client LOVE.
System requirements do not skyrocket because of this, the developer himself recommends using $150 video cards for stable operation, and connection requirements are even lower – there are reports of normal gaming even at a speed of 64 Kbps. However, there are no Russian servers, so the bar should be raised to at least 128 Kbps.
The Verse protocol, originally designed for networking, is also used. If one person builds a bridge across a chasm or digs a bunker, others will immediately see them and be able to take advantage of them. Actually, with the help of this protocol, the opportunity to change the world all together is realized.
We entered a half-empty English server – it seems that the first tribes have just appeared on it. Nevertheless, the position of our refuge is very pleasing: there are a lot of symbols, someone seriously took care of the inaccessibility of the “base” – on the one hand, all the important resources are located high up, and a narrow path leads to them, which is easy to control. On the other hand, there is a real moat with water below. In short, we are in an impregnable bastion.
A lot depends on communication here. In a tribe you do everything for the common good; everyone can use the symbol they bring. However, the division of tasks is also important – someone is looking for symbols, and someone is leveling the ground or standing on defense. Usually everyone does what they like.
Found a source of energy. The energy well allows you to direct it… somewhere. We don’t know why.
Using any tool requires energy. Without it, the character cannot do anything serious – neither build a wall, nor create a room.
Found out! It turns out that this was done on purpose so that players could quickly build a plant for the production of special energy containers. We collected a few – and now there is enough energy to at least raise the entire base even higher!
We learned how to control the energy well using the “Configuration” symbol. Knowing the coordinates, you can direct the beam of energy wherever you want. If you send it to a special transmitter, then it will be able, in turn, to go where the original beam may not “finish off”.
Half an hour later we figured it out completely. Electricity is directed like this:
1. Coordinates are entered.
2. The beam is redirected.
3. Let’s move on.
We feel like engineers – https://all-jackpots-casino.co.uk/ one of the first MMOs where you need to understand not the character’s statistics, but the operation of the mechanism, then using its advantage.
We launched the production of energy containers and first aid kits! Our tribe will be pleased. We are planning to carry out an inventory of the property.
Conducted an unplanned raid on the territory of a hostile AI. It looked like this: just walking, we came across bots. They took out blasters and started shooting. After searching the area, they found a symbol and brought it to their settlement.
Upon entering the game, we saw a message: “Follow the arrow to join the settlement.”. Therefore, that strong dwelling, that fort with many symbols and means of defense no longer exists. I don’t know how many hours it took to grow, but it fell very quickly. The survivors apparently migrated. While walking to a new place, we came across several stones with messages like “So-and-so’s tribe built a settlement here.”.
But nearby there were only ruins, traces of defensive structures and left behind symbols. Now you look at them completely differently.
The settlement is located in a small clearing, barely covered by rocks. It already has several symbols and energy transmitters. Well, now we’ll settle here, although this one can’t compare with the old base. And it is unknown how many minutes later this village will turn into the same ruins that we recently walked past.
IN LOVE I came across a discovery that was not found in other MMOs. Your past actions are saved. Grown mountains, buildings, entire cities – everything remains. And while playing, you leave a trail that other people will follow after you.
We met a real guru of this game. At least he knows how things roughly work. All the cities before us were destroyed not by humans, but by bots – other characters led by artificial intelligence (in April 2010, the PvP system had not yet been introduced, and all people were on the same side). Sooner or later they find any city and attack it. And we need to unite to set up a base before they arrive. Apply electric current, find the necessary symbols and defend yourself. We learned a lot about the world here (it looks like a planet, so there is a real round horizon), about servers and symbols.
A symbol is not only a weapon. This is any action that goes beyond “grab, jump, walk”. The "blaster" symbol allows you to shoot, its enhanced version, the "hyperblaster", makes it possible to shoot even cooler.
At the time of writing in LOVE about sixty symbols are available to mere mortals, including: “Radio”, which allows you to control buildings at a distance, as well as communicate with characters located far from you; “Artillery” is a building that, when connected to an electrical circuit, is capable of directing fire to certain coordinates; "BFG" is a very powerful gun; “Motion detector” is a device that is triggered when someone passes near it (if you combine it with explosives, you get a mine that can detonate when a certain word is spoken on the radio); symbols for decorating and arranging the territory, with which you can plant trees, make windows inside walls, and so on.
You can carry only four active symbols with you – enough to take, say, “tools” and establish electricity in the settlement. Or four types of "weapons" to become a soldier. Well, there are no classes – whoever you want, consider yourself to be.
At the same time, an experienced comrade turned a small clearing into an outpost – he installed walls, made a small cave. I also made a backup path. Our house is located at the edge of a hefty hill, so you can only approach it from one side. If a character finds a symbol and is carrying it with him, he does not move as quickly as he did when he was light, and he has to stomp around. However, Widz (that’s his nickname) made a small cliff along which you can walk to the base from any side. And at the base itself he left steps for us to climb up if something happened.
Everything has become much clearer. We need to find as many defensive symbols as possible (there are turrets and defensive fields here) and take care of the city and the tribe. Target? I don’t know, but I really enjoyed getting to know this game world. There are a lot of mysteries left in it, and you can’t run from bots all the time? In a word, in the next two days we will try to make this place a real fortress.
Now the words Eskil’a that everything is in LOVE is changing very quickly, it became clear. And that city no longer exists. I came across, it seems, the place where it used to be – now trees and grass grow there, and almost nothing remains of the walls.
New place again. Lots of symbols, a couple of people helping it grow… I’ve already seen this somewhere.
There are funiculars here! Externally they look like hooks (or huge blades of grass) rotating in place. If power is supplied to them from an energy well, then you can connect them together and travel!
The funicular itself will drag you from one point to another. So you can ride across abysses, or even across half the planet, probably!
There are turrets here, but they require a lot of energy. It needs to be accumulated by picking up energy capsules from a special machine that makes them, and only then put them in the right place. The mini-factory also needs food, we even had a silent dispute about this in our settlement. I walked over and set up the transmitter so that it would power the machines that produced first aid kits and energy capsules. One of the other players took food from the health kit factory to the protective field. I redirected it back. This happened a couple of times until we decided that at least part of our base needed a protective shell, otherwise there would be a quick migration again.
The first raid on our new haven. There were several bots. I was leaving the walls when suddenly several blaster charges flashed nearby. I shot one, ran back and yelled at the whole village with capslock: “AI! A.I! AI IS COMING!"The guys, who had seemed leisurely before, rushed behind the wall with guns. The attack was repelled, but now it is clear what the “migration” process looks like. Gradually there are more and more bots, they receive more and more modern weapons and improve their cities. They find a “village”, destroy the monolith (the most important symbol, without it there is no settlement)… And that’s it.
The tribesmen said that they needed another special symbol that could maintain a force field around the village. This is very valuable, but you can only get it in the “green” settlement. We met them before – we wandered through the caves and came across a whole group that began to shower us with blaster charges.
Well, today there will be a race to the “green” base (the bots have different colors, they also “live” in “settlements”, and they all have different symbols in their storage). From them we must take the extremely valuable “Protective Field” here. If power is applied to it, it creates a shell that protects, say, a structure from damage. Very useful, considering that bots have already evolved to such an extent that in some areas they can take out a character with one grenade.
From time to time, a so-called “flood” occurs – the water level rises sharply, making certain areas inaccessible while opening up access to others that were previously inaccessible. This is a very interesting and humane experience, because the flood only reaches the lowest monolith, and it can even be simply prevented!
The walk was quite long – bots also migrate, and their search may take a long time. In the process, they found a factory for the production of bombs – if you throw one of these nearby, it can demolish some object and at the same time leave behind a hole (terraforming has not gone away).
A bug was discovered in one of the dungeons – the character was thrown up above the planet. The hero took off into the clouds and saw a ball exactly like the one he would land on. Amazing, mesmerizing spectacle. It’s good that I filmed it and can show it in a video review.
However, the base was found, and a little later, after searching the nearest altars, we found the “Protective Field” – the bots have a very good outer ring of defense, but if it is broken, then there is no need to worry too much, only scattered groups remain. They brought the symbol to the village and discovered that not a single food system could reach it.
We pulled the power repeater to a great height – and nothing. As a result, they somehow connected it to the energy well. Part of the settlement and symbols are protected from periodic raids.
The bots were just approaching our home. The guys held the line, but I went to look for symbols (the blaster was destroyed by a stray charge or a grenade).
I was sure that the next time I entered LOVE, I will find the character in a new place, because that settlement will no longer exist, only ruins will remain. And walking through the forest in search of a new symbol, I will step on the lands of my ancestors. They lived in those places a couple of days ago, hunted and explored the beautiful world around them… And then the tribe moved.
Further – as desired. You don’t have to enter the game after getting to know its world. Or build something huge, walk around the entire planet, explore many caves, try out all the symbols..
As they say on the official website, “It’s in your hands now”.
Pros: great and fresh concept; amazing “watercolor” graphics; interesting physical model with procedural materials; the ability to freely explore and change the game world; Two people can play from one account; no need to “pump up stats”; light weight of the game client.
Cons: the concept of “build a settlement and defend it” can become boring; at the time of writing the material, some services were missing – the password recovery service was not yet working (they had to be written down), the client auto-update system was not put into operation; no soundtrack.
P.S. However, the game was created by one person, so the lack of LOVE the permanent presence of a server farm can be understood.
P.P.S. StopGame.ru expresses gratitude to the player Widz for help in creating the material.
